What's in a marble table?
What's in a marble table - quite a lot if it is a Saarinen tulip table.
We’re having more than a moment over our Saarinen style tables. One of the most iconic designs to come out of the mid-century modern era, Time magazine reported in its cover story that Eero Saarinen was designing a collection to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home”. Saarinen’s Pedestal collection would resolve what he saw as a clutter of table and chair legs and The Pedestal collection went on to win the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award. It’s a serious achievement in our book to produce a piece of beauty from an initial concept of reducing it to its simplest functional form. 60 years after it was designed, the ‘Tulip table’ transcends the style of the interior it is placed in with a timeless quality and elegance of its own.
The inspiration for the cast aluminum base is a drop of high-viscosity liquid and combined with the smooth marble top, creates a table that is both curvaceous and tactile as well as being statuesque. This dichotomy is the real beauty of the Pedestal collection – its design is seemingly so simple and yet marble infers a sense of grandeur. A natural beauty, marble has been enjoying its popular status for the last few seasons in the world of interiors, and on our trip to Maison et Objet early this year, we saw its use by countless well-known design brands. Its the perfect material for the table as both the boast the ability to be both contemporary and traditional.
