Platner (1919-2006) studied architecture at Cornell University and on graduating, worked for famous designer, Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei. In 1967, he set up his own design studio, creating furniture, lighting and textiles as well as working on architectural interiors. The Platner Collection that he worked on included glass tables on a base of stainless steel rods and they became icons of 60s modernism. In his own words, "I felt there was room for a kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Amongst the famous projects that Platner designed were The Ford Foundation HQ (1967), The Georg Jensen Design Centre (1968), New York's windows on the World Restaurant (1976) and the interior renovation of the Pan Am building (1986) when MetLife replaced it. He received the Rome Prize in Architecture in 1955 and was inducted into Interior Design Magazine's Hall of Fame.
